A semen analysis looks at the quality of sperm. It’s one of the first steps in detecting fertility issues. The test involves collecting a semen sample and evaluating it in our dedicated andrology laboratory. Whether or not you are generally healthy or have had a child before, we always recommend semen analysis. When couples are struggling to start a family around 30% of cases are related to sperm, so it’s essential to assess sperm quality.
Semen analysis is a laboratory examination of a semen sample under a microscope, assessing factors such as volume, sperm count, motility, and morphology. Semen is a fluid, ejaculated from the penis during orgasm, containing sperm, fluids for lubrication, and various proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
This test may be recommended for assessing infertility issues or to verify the success of a vasectomy. It involves providing a semen sample, preferably through masturbation, in a sterile container, ensuring cleanliness and avoiding contamination.
The analysis includes evaluating pH levels, semen volume, sperm concentration, morphology, motility, time to liquefaction, vitality, aggregation, agglutination, presence of red blood cells and white blood cells. Results may indicate fertility status or post-vasectomy outcomes.
Preparation for the analysis involves refraining from sexual activity for a specific period, depending on the purpose of the test. Partners can assist in sample collection, but precautions are necessary to avoid affecting sperm quality. While semen analysis can be offered elsewhere, they may not provide as comprehensive results as dedicated fertility Centre laboratory tests. Follow-up analyses may be scheduled to monitor sperm production accurately.
Semen analysis is recommended for:
• All male partners of couples trying to conceive (either naturally or with treatment)
• After vasectomy
• After treatments aimed to improve semen quality
